Easy Ways to Customise Your Motorsport Helmet

A custom paint job is probably the first thing that comes to mind when you think about personalising a motorsport helmet, but it definitely isn’t the only option. A few smaller changes can make a surprising difference to how your helmet looks, and they’re generally much easier to swap around if you fancy changing things again later.

Visors, coloured hardware and aerodynamic accessories are all simple ways to put your own stamp on a helmet. Whether you want to pick up colours already used in the graphics or completely change the look of a plain black or white lid, there are plenty of ways to make it feel a little more like yours.

Change the visor

The Z20 Visor range is probably the easiest place to start because changing the visor can completely change the character of a helmet. Z20 visors fit the Zamp RZ-Series helmets and are available in a range of finishes, from darker options through to brighter Prism colours.

As well as choosing something that works with the colours of your helmet, it’s worth thinking about the conditions you normally race in. Having more than one visor in your kit can also be useful if light or weather conditions change throughout the day.

Add colour with visor screws and HANS posts

Sometimes it’s the smaller details that finish a helmet off. The coloured screws available through the Z-20 Shield Retention Kit are an easy way to pick up a colour already used in the helmet graphics or add a bit of contrast to a plain shell.

HANS posts can also become part of the overall look. They’re there for safety first, of course, but choosing a finish that works with your visor or helmet graphics can make the whole setup feel more considered.

It doesn’t need to be complicated either. A coloured visor with matching screws or HANS posts is often enough to make a standard helmet feel much more personal.

Spoilers and airflow accessories

If you want to change the shape of the helmet as well as the colour, aerodynamic accessories are another option. Depending on your helmet model, you can add accessories such as a rear spoiler, chin spoiler or top vent scoop. These can change the overall look of the helmet while also serving a practical purpose on compatible models.

Compatibility varies between helmets, so it’s always worth checking that the accessory is designed for your particular model before ordering. Some fitted accessories are also more permanent than others, which is worth bearing in mind if you like changing your setup regularly.

Don’t forget the practical extras

Not every addition has to be purely cosmetic. Visor tear-offs are particularly useful in open-cockpit racing, where spray, rubber and debris can quickly affect visibility.

They allow you to remove a dirty outer layer and get a clear view again without changing the visor itself. If you’re using a coated or Prism visor, make sure you check which tear-offs are suitable before fitting them.

Make it your own

You don’t need to completely repaint or wrap a helmet to make it feel different. Changing the visor and adding a couple of carefully chosen details can be enough to transform the overall look without overdoing it.

The main thing is making sure anything you add is compatible with your helmet and fitted correctly. If you’re unsure what works with your model, you can browse the Zamp accessories range or speak to the team before ordering.
